In a similar analysis, I examined whether opinion news affects congressional party affect, the extent to which the respondent likes or dislikes the opposing congressional party. For instance, individuals were asked to place “Republicans in Congress” on a ten-point favorability scale, with higher numbers meaning a more favorable feeling toward congressional Republicans. Table 4.4 reports the effects of opinion news exposure on opposing congressional party affect. The results are mixed. Controlling for partisanship and ideology, viewers who chose to watch more of the O’Reilly Factor program were significantly less favorable of congressional Democrats. This result does not hold, though, for viewers of the liberal Keith Olbermann program.
